Jacksonville Fight

Jacksonville, FL—April, 28, 2007.  The mixed martial arts action continues for local fighters as the Tallahassee Fight Club made a trip to Jacksonville for the inaugural Reality Combat Championship event. Billed as one of the most complete MMA productions in the state, the RCC gathered some of the region’s best young talent including local competitors Shane Weinischke, Dan Funes, and Josh Samman.

Weinischke faced fellow Floridian prospect Eben Oroz in a 145lb contest. While the Tallahassee fighter imposed a fast pace, Oroz showed his caliber by taking a submission victory via guillotine choke in the first round.

With a short notice match-up against regional featherweight force, North Carolina’s Jarrod Card, TFC trainer Dan Funes continued an ambitious start to the year, which has included facing world jiu-jitsu champion Marcos Da Matta in March. After Funes showed superior striking, Card took the fight to the ground where both fighter exchanged and continuously scrambled to the cheers of thousands in attendance throughout the first stanza. However, Card’s experience won out as he held onto a second round guillotine choke despite a slam from Funes to put a climatic end one of the evening’s most exciting battles.

Fight of the Night honors went to local fighter, Josh Samman, and Florida Freestyle Academy product, Travis Miller. After twice nearly knocking out Miller on their feet and showing a dominant ground and pound game, Samman took a unanimous decision after an exhausting three round war. As the FFA is headed by world-champion grappling and kickboxing instructors, Miller came in as a heavy favorite but Samman’s confidence in his abilities and training showed throughout.

This past weekend’s promotion has undeniably put the Tallahassee Fight Club on the map, as all three fighters proved more than capable of stepping up to the level of regional events. In response to the newfound focus from the mixed martial arts community, the TFC has collectively responded, “We’re ready.”
